It’s mid-afternoon and Tommy is assembling a house specialty. The shrimp dumplings will be deep fried on order and served as appetizers. It’s a daily task.
“We do what is called Indian-Hakka Chinese food here,’ says Tommy, the co-owner of Chopstick Cuisine, ‘It originates from Calcutta where we are from.”
Chopstick Cuisine is a spacious and friendly restaurant located in the west most corner of a Singh Plaza on a busy part of Derry Road in Malton. The strip along Derry and Rexdale Road has become the go to area in this part of the GTA in the search of fiery Hakka.
Visiting during the day is a good way to sample Chopstick Cuisine’s unique dishes. One list holds lunch specials and the combos-plates can be ordered well into the afternoon.
The Chinese have lived in Calcutta, now called Kolkata, for over two centuries. Early migrants were drawn to on the sugar plantations. Successive generations became entrepreneurs and traders of goods. Many took to opening food establishments in the growing and flourishing city.
Tommy brought this inspiration when he immigrated to Canada in the 1990’s. He was a professional accountant. Then things changed. In search of opportunity, he started an enterprise. He began a venture with his brother-in-law. ‘Roland is a brilliant chef, with 20 years of experience,’ says Tommy. It’s a family business.
Indian-Hakka Chinese style food can be best described as being a unique sizzling blend of freshly prepared oriental vegetables, chicken, meat and seafood, assembled quickly using traditional Chinese cooking methods, crafting in Indian spices, masalas, along with chillies, fresh garlic and ginger. The result is a delicious fusion of textures and tastes that appeal to the finery palates of South and South-East Asians. There is an ample overlap of Szechuan, Singaporean, Malaysian and Islamic influences. The staff at Chopstick Cuisine has developed many vegetarian options as well.
Perusing the Chopstick Cuisine menu you will see enticing items like Lollipop Chicken appetizers, Deep Fried Spicy Tiger Shrimp, Hakka Vegetable Chow Mein, Tofu with Mixed Vegetables in Hot Chilli Sauce, Chilli Beef, Bombay Manchurian Chicken, Mango Achar Chicken, Sweet and Sour Fish, Pad Thai with Vegetables, and Tandoori Chicken Fried Rice. You can top all of this off with plain, sweet, or salty, Lassi, a Mango Ice-Cream, or a more exotic Fried Banana with Vanilla Ice-Cream and Syrup. There is full LLBO licensed bar service as well.
It’s really a great place for dinner with friends, friends or colleagues. The dinner experience is orderly and quiet. There is no TV or overly baring music.
