Mississauga has quietly become one of the premiere filming destinations for Hollywood. As insane as that might sound, it’s true; in the past few years the city has been the shooting location for TV shows like Amazon’s The Boys, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, and Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale; as well as movies like A Simple Favour, Kick-Ass 2, Downsizing, and Oscar-winning movie, The Shape of Water.
And that truly is just the tip of the iceberg. In the past decade, Hollywood starting shifting many of its film and television productions to Canada in order to take advantage of the country’s big tax breaks. Since then, Toronto and Vancouver have been the two most popular filming destinations in the western world, but Mississauga is quickly catching up.
Due to the high-level, and high volume of productions that are taking place within the city on a literal monthly basis, several companies are looking to stamp their flag in the ground by establishing entire production studios in Mississauga. There are already a few, including one that opened in January on 6115 Edwards Blvd.
The company that opened that space is Whites Studios, and the company must have been really pleased with its first foray into Mississauga because it is opening a second studio that is even larger. While the first was 150,000 square feet across four sound stages, the new one is 181,000 square feet across a further four stages. The new space will be called Whites Studios Cantay and is scheduled to open in early 2021.
Mayor Bonnie Crombie spoke on the new studio and what it means for the city.
This investment will not only support jobs and attract talent from coast to coast; it will also boost economic growth and further raise Mississauga’s profile in the film sector. Now home to six major film studios, Mississauga is the ideal place for Canada’s film and television sector to thrive, given our strategic location, proximity to the airport and competitive business environment. Mississauga’s creative industry is on the rise.
Of course, filming in our neck of the woods is always exciting but moreover it means a litany of new jobs for experienced professionals, and a possible foot-in-the-door for younger folk looking an opportunity. Whites Studios will be a rental space for companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney, which are always looking for new opportunities.
We’re always excited to share the news of new openings in the city, especially when it will contribute to the economy and increase the worldwide status of Mississauga. So welcome Whites Studios!
