As you’ll already know, most TV shows and movies are set in the United States of America. What you may not know is that most of those shows and movies are actually filmed in Canada, using our towns and cities as surrogates for American counterparts.
Why? I hear you ask. Well, it’s because it’s astronomically cheaper to film in Canada. The Great White North has tax breaks that mean union labour gets a huge discount, and even more depending on which province you’re in. On top of that, digital effects cost 20% less if they’re done in Canada, and more. The Canadian Government has went out of its way to make Canada the premiere filming destination for Hollywood, which why you see everything from Rise of the Planet of the Apes to Suicide Squad, Bates Motel to Suits filmed here.
Well, it just so happens that one of Netflix’s latest shows was filmed right here in Mississauga. The Umbrella Academy is a super-popular show about a group of misfits with superpowers, and it jumps between their optimistic youth and jaded older selves. The TV series is an adaptation of a Dark Horse Comic series by former My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way.
While the entirety of the show was shot between Toronto, Mississauga, and Hamilton, there are several scenes that are clearly in our neck of the woods. For example, the scene shown above is from Episode 3, in which characters visit a motel. Well, that motel just happens to be the Mississauga Gate Inn, located at 1938 Dundas Street East.
And that’s just one small example. There’s time when you can see Port Credit, Hurontario Street, and more. It’s always novel seeing your hometown and nearby areas appear in movies and television, even if it’s meant to be somewhere else.
We can expect to see lots more of this in the near future and, in fact, we’ll be telling you all about the next big show filming here in the very near future, so keep your eyes peeled. Until then, go watch The Umbrella Academy on Netflix and see how many times you can spot Mississauga and let us know the results!
