As someone who hails from the United Kingdom, more specifically Northern Ireland, I can attest to how difficult it is to find home-style food here in Canada. In Britain and Ireland, the most popular fast food isn’t McDonald’s, Subway, or KFC, it’s your local chip-shop, lovingly called a “chippy”. These chip-shops are kind of jack-of-all-trades, as they serve fish and chips, burgers, chicken strips, onion rings, sausages, chicken bites, chicken sandwiches -which we call burgers – wraps, and a large variety of fries with gravy, curry, cheese, and more.

As with anything, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and us foreigners find ourselves longing for Canadian equivalents to these stores. Sadly, I can safely say there is no such equivalent in the GTA. However, the very best and closest thing I have found is a little shop just outside of Port Credit: Country Fish & Chips.

Country Fish & Chips is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it store along Lakeshore Road East. The outside of the store is a just a big double glass window, with the store name emblazoned above on a sky blue sign. While it might be small enough to miss, it also stands out for its uniqueness.

Once you step inside, you may even be surprised by how cosy the interior is. The building has teal-coloured walls with white wood panelling, low hanging-lights, a simple chalkboard menu on the wall, a large ornamental fish on the wall, and six basic wooden tables. It’s fantastically British.

Country Fish & Chips has been a staple of Mississauga for many years at this point, and it’s easy to see why. While the interior design is cleverly simple and therefore traditional, the food is the star of the show that keeps people coming back. Unsurprisingly, Country Fish & Chips specialises in the namesake.

Starting with that speciality, Country Fish & Chips offers various seafood options. Cod, Haddock, and Halibut (with chips) are the three main options, and even the more expensive, halibut, only costs $15. The standard fish and chips option, regardless of species, is consistently great; crispy but not burnt, tasty but not greasy, golden chips, and fairly huge portions.

You can also choose Fish SandwichesShrimp and Clamstrips with chips, if you’d rather not go for the standard fish options. If you come with a group, Country Fish & Chips offers family bundles; the Large Haddock Family Special consists of six pieces of haddock and four orders of chips, for only $53.50! That works out at less than $10 per portion. There are six of these options, so the whole family can dine for cheap!

If fish isn’t your thing, fret not, Country Fish & Chips offers more than the name would suggest! You can grab a Hamburger, Chicken Fingers, Chicken Nuggets, Poutine, as well as starters like Onion Rings, Calamari, Battered Mushrooms, Sweet Potato Fries, and more!

If the menu sounds appealing, and it should, Country Fish & Chips offers both pick-up and delivery. If you want to get some great fish and chips delivered right to your front door, you can check out the store’s Skip The Dishes page.

Country Fish & Chips is one of Mississauga’s oldest and most beloved eateries. As such, it has great ratings on Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor. We’ve compiled a few of these reviews to let you know what other people think:

“My all-time favourite fish and chips meal got served up in Uxbridge England and was to die for and even came wrapped up in newspaper. Country of Port Credit avoids the newspaper but is as memorable and my band of epicurists totally enjoyed the tastiness of our fish.”

“Recently ate at this restaurant. I checked TripAdvisor 1st, reading the reviews, which recommended Country Fish n Chips. Located in the heart of pretty Port Credit! The restaurant is perfect. The staff are very nice, it’s a cute place with fabulous food. I would go again in a heartbeat.”

“Had lunch here with an old high school friend as he said he has been coming here for years. I certainly wasn’t disappointed on what I got for the price I paid for it. Generous portions at reasonable prices. Good customer service as it is a Port Credit run family business. Place has been around for a number of years plus popular with the locals.”
