Let me guess, you’re bored of doing the same old things. Every weekend you have the same handful of options; go to the same bar/club, waste money getting drunk, go see a movie, or sit at home and long for some good times. Well I’m here to tell you that there is a world of unique things you could be doing that are far more memorable than the same boring stuff you did last week.
Mississauga can be a pretty cool place. Sure, if you’ve grown-up here your entire life you might not see things that way but I’m going to bet there’s a lot of things you have yet to try for yourself. And I’m sure you’re aware of some of the choices on this list but you’ve never brought yourself to try them. Well this is your wake-up call!
Get outside your comfort zone, do something completely different that you will remember for months and maybe years to come. Something you won’t be able to wait to tell others about and recommend they try for themselves. Trust me, once you branch out and start really making the most of your weekends, you won’t want to go back to that crappy boring Saturday.
Go skydiving at iFly
(iFly Indoor Skydiving, 2007 Winston Park Dr, Oakville, ON L6H 6P5)
Ever wanted to fall to your death? Or at least simulate that experience? Well, you can do just that at iFly indoor skydiving on Winston Park Drive. If you’ve ever been up to the plaza at Winston, or even just drove past, you’ve probably noticed the impressive-looking iFly building. But you didn’t go inside. I can totally understand the apprehension; skydiving is an activity that doesn’t appeal to everyone, it’s for the daredevils of the world. However at iFly, you won’t be jumping off of any cliffs or feeling like a yo-yo. To simulate sky diving they have you step inside a big glass circular room and it shoots you up into the air. You’ve probably seen them in movies or somewhere but you can’t imagine how amazing it actually feels until you’re in there. iFly is the closest you’ll probably ever come to actually flying.
Go 50’s and catch a drive-in movie
(5 Drive-In, 2332 Ninth Line, Oakville, ON L6H 7G9)
If you’re anything like me, this is the kind of thing you’ve seen in movies for years and always yearned to do, but never looked into it. Drive-in movies are a quintessential American experience, and that counts for Canada as well.
As luck would have it, there’s a fantastic drive in theatre right here near Mississauga (full address above). Besides the obvious advantage of getting to watch a movie from the comfort of your car, the drive-in also has later show times than most theatres and is so much cheaper!
You can catch two new box office blockbusters movies for $12! That’s insane value for your hard-earned dollars. I love going to the movies, genuinely one of my favourite pass-times, but on a millennial’s salary that usually means one or two movies a month at best. Head to the drive-in though and you can catch a multitude of new releases for half the price. On top of all that, there’s a 50’s style diner for your entire hamburger needs! You couldn’t possibly need more convincing!
(Bad Axe Throwing, 4-4880 Tomken Rd, Mississauga, Ontario L4W 1J8)
Who needs bowling when you can go axe-throwing? We’ve all been bowling, probably a dozen or more times. Sure it’s fun and garners a few laughs, but the novelty has kinda worn off. Well the good people over at Bad Axe Throwing want to reignite your instinctual desire to throw heavy objects!
Bad Axe Throwing offers exactly what you can imagine; a safe environment to hurl axes at walls. Imagine a gun range but with axes. Honestly I don’t think there’s much else to say about this because it kinda sells itself. Although if you’re a girl and think this sounds too brutish, I can guarantee you this is an activity for everyone, kids included. So get down to the lanes and channel your inner viking!
Go play detective
(Captive Escape Rooms, 3413 Wolfedale Rd | Unit 5, Mississauga, Ontario L5C 1V8)
OK, so I’m sure you’ve played, or at least hear of, an escape room game. This a very popular genre of video games of which you can find hundreds on your app store. Well it turns out these video games have come to life and become very popular in the past few years.
Locking yourself in a bizarre room for an hour probably doesn’t sound all that exciting but it’s an excuse for you and your friends to become Mystery Inc. and attempt to find all the clues and solve the mysteries in order to escape.
Captive Escape Rooms offers the best challenge rooms in all of Mississauga, from Dracula’s Library, in which you are trapped in a 1862 New Orleans mansion by the dark prince himself, to The Surgeon, which is eerily reminiscent of a Saw movie. Escape rooms challenge all your wits and intelligence, while forcing you to work as a team with a few friends. If this isn’t a unique way to spend a Saturday night, I don’t know what is!
Go fly a (virtual) plane
(uFly Simulator, 1535 Meyerside Dr | Unit 6, Mississauga, Ontario L5T 1M9)
Right off the bat, you might be asking; why would I want to fly a virtual plane, when I could fly a real plane?. Sure, you could go take some flying lessons and that would be an awesome way to kill some time and learn a new skill, but are you really gonna go do that? Probably not.
uFly Simulator, not to be confused with iFly Skydiving, is a realistic flight simulator that puts you in the cockpit of a Boeing 777. So that’s the first difference – you could possibly take some lessons in a helicopter or some little aircrafts, but a Boeing 777 is a different beast altogether. You step inside the insanely realistic flight deck, fully equipped with HD screens that simulate your journey from runway to the open sky and back to the runway. With the dizzying array of buttons inside the cockpit, all of which function exactly the way they would in a real plane, the safety of everyone on board is in your hands: the pilot.
uFly Simulator is as close as you’ll ever get to flying a gigantic plane across the Atlantic Ocean and you won’t have to leave the safety of the ground to do-so. There’s no death-defying manoeuvres involved and you’ll have a memorable night to tell everyone about. So what are you waiting for?
